Why Acting Is Not For The Faint Of Heart…

Transcript Of Video:

“No…

I don’t think acting is about pretending…

I think acting is about just the opposite of that…

I think acting asks of us…

To look at the human condition…

In a way that does not allow for a pretty little filter…

To be put upon what life really holds.

Life really holds a series of struggles…

A series of trials and tribulations…

And for many people…

A lot of suffering.

And I think as an actor we have to really look at that with a magnifying glass…

And then find that within us…

In order to reveal it.

And that’s not for the faint of heart…

That takes a lot of will…

That takes a lot of strength…

That takes a lot of courage…

And that takes a lot of self-introspection…

In order to find that within oneself…

And then have the strength…

And the bravery…

To actually reveal that…

Without filter…

In all its messiness…

In all its grit and glory…

And the beauty of that…

Is that when you have this type of art form…

It gives the possibility…

That someone witnessing that art form…

Will…

Or can be…

Changed.

That transformation can happen for another…

Individually…

And collectively.

To be able to have someone witness your experience…

Can actually validate your experience…

In that it allows you to know that…

You’re not alone going on this journey we call ‘Life’…

And the beauty of acting…

Is that’s what we’re doing all the time…

We’re telling stories of human beings…

Going through struggles…

Going through strife…

And then saying…

‘Hey Listen…

This is what WE go through…

And you’re not alone!’

And then the hope of that is…

Somehow by witnessing that from an audience approach/perspective…

Some kind of healing will happen…

Or at least an awakening…

So acting…

Not only becomes this amazing beautiful art form…

But it also becomes this amazing beautiful service…

To humanity…

And mankind as a whole.”

Making $#!+ Happen!

810b3d06-f577-4e5f-9458-a1f3d3cf4ac2

If you are not willing to do the work…

Guess what?

There is someone out there who most certainly is.

As harsh as that may seem, it is absolutely true!

And as artists, this is true x 1000%.

In an industry where there are countless artists pursuing creative paths, you better believe that you have to fully show up to the plate if you expect to break in and break through.

It is the difference between an idea and a dream.

It is the difference between a hobby and a career.

An idea and a hobby are great but there is no personal risk factor if it does not happen.

In other words, your insides are not going to be tied up in knots and you are not going to lose sleep if it does not happen for you.

It is very c’est la vie.

When we get into dreams and a career, it matters.

You better believe it matters!

You want it.

You yearn for it.

You eat, drink and sleep it.

And if it is not happening, it most likely hurts.

It can even break your heart in its absence!

It means something to you in ways that make no sense other than your soul simply craves it.

But having dreams can only take you as far as you are willing to put in the work to make those dreams materialize.

Otherwise, they are just sitting there playing around in some imaginative part of your brain pressing upon that button that makes you hope and wish for that special something that it is going to magically make those dreams actualize before your very eyes.

But it does not work that way!

The common denominator with those fulfilling their dreams is that they work their asses off to make it happen.

When I think of all my students and clients out there that are having great successes, I can tell you first hand how much work and sacrifice they have put into the work they so profoundly love.

And once they are actually doing the work they love, they are working their asses off to make sure that the quality of work they are putting out there is congruent with all the work they did to actually make it all happen.

You have to do the work to make it happen!

And let’s be honest…

There are no days off if nothing is happening.

Even if it is one small thing everyday towards your goals…

Do it!

Do not wait until tomorrow!

Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Many small things add up miraculously to become huge breakthroughs.

Sometimes this means making healthy and productive sacrifices along the way to make your dreams happen.

But no one is going to do the work for you.

These are your dreams and you have to be accountable for putting in all the necessary components…

And that includes the work.

If you want to experience a reality that allows you to do what you always dreamt of doing, you have to make it not just a dream.

You need to get yourself together and start getting in there and getting your hands dirty making the path to the destination.

First, you need the passion.

That passion is the thing that drives you forward no matter how many obstacles appear along the way.

And the majority of the time, there will be obstacles.

But it is that passion that keeps your eye on the prize and reminds you of the intention of what you are going after.

And that passion is necessary because it reiterates that whatever you are going after is alive and burning beautifully in your soul.

It is that passion that allows you to meet those obstacles eye to eye, learning from them, and then using them towards your goal.

Next, you need a fire in your belly that excites you and uses your creative resources to actually start creating.

That very fire gets things out of your head and into tangible reality.

It is that fire that allows you to experiment, to fall down, to make mistakes, and to learn what is useful and what is not along the path to making it all happen.

Then there is inspiration.

You need to be inspired to keep those creative juices flowing in your Spirit to want to continue to artistically explore and implement action towards your goals.

And if you are lacking inspiration…

Go seek it out!

Open your eyes…

And your ears…

And your heart!

Walk outside and just witness the splendor in everything around you.

There is a story in everything.

And this includes things you may have thought are just meaningless objects.

Allow Life to feed your soul so you can feed your creative path.

And then there is the discipline.

You need some kind of personal discipline to hold youself accountable for not allowing the momentum of what you are going after to slip through the cracks.

That discipline is a practice, just like any other practice, that keeps you productive and moving forward.

It keeps you learning.

It keeps you growing.

It keeps you trying.

It keeps your experimenting.

It keeps you expanding.

It keeps you active.

And it keeps you productive.

Finally, and most importantly, the work has to be fun.

The second you allow the fun to dissolve…

The second the enjoyment goes out the window…

It is no longer a dream…

It becomes a burden.

And that burden dampens the passion…

It smothers the fire…

It turns out the lights on inspiration.

And it turns productive discipline into a boring and unwilling obligation.

And then all is lost.

Keep it fun and remind yourself of why you chose your creative path to begin with.

So with all that said…

What are you waiting for?

Hold yourself accountable for the realization of your dreams.

Be the one that goes to work for you because you want it and you know it is possible.

Be the CEO of your own Life and continue to grow, learn, expand and evolve.

And if you are becoming aware that any of the above components are missing, you gotta change things up so you can make $#!+ happen!

You have to be your own grand manifester.

By the nature of who we are as artists, we are already creative beings which means we already have that manifestation gene within us.

We have to utilize it if we expect$#!+ to happen.

Be the one that makes it happen for you and then experience the bliss of our dreams as your reality!

Your Fight Song

5f2a0947-6fa9-4cfb-85d1-0ddb7426a94c

There is a question that comes up time and time again.

“Why do we talk and explore so much about suffering in the work?”

It is a great question and one that deserves an explanation that makes sense and can actually be applied to our process.

To not answer this question does the actor, the artist, the human being a great disservice.

And in my opinion, not addressing this question misleads the actor or any artist as to what he or she needs to do and viscerally understand in order to bring a profound level of truth to the work…

And actually, understand what the journey is all about.

To go a step further, it is a useful question for any human being to explore if there is a willingness.

This kind of questioning is not for the faint of heart as it asks us to look at people, places and experiences that cause discomfort.

This kind of questioning awakens us from our potential sleepwalking and allows us to have an awareness/higher consciousness of the human experience.

You see, we can want share and reveal peace and love through our work…

But you must understand that that objective is a result of the work.

That is an admirable and beautiful way of approaching any kind of art form.

But the truth of the matter is the real work is about understanding human beings striving and overcoming countless obstacles (at every moment actually)  in order to experience peace and love.

In my 41 years of being on this Earth, I have yet to meet a single human being that has not experienced suffering in one way or another.

And I have yet to come into contact with any human being that is not trying to improve his or her present situation or reality in one way or another.

It is one thing that we all have in common, besides biologically what we are made of, that cannot be contested.

And it sure as hell is the one thing that drives every single story that has ever been written.

Humans GO THROUGH A LOT…

And to deny that is to deny the truth of the human condition.

Even monks who meditate and are at “peace” are at “peace” because they work on it through meditation constantly with the attempt for the peace to not be disturbed so they can maintain their peace.

From the moment we are born we are brought into a series of sufferings and wants.

Think about it…

We go from the comfort of our mom’s womb where everything is done for us and we travel out of a birth canal into the complete uncertainty and unknown of Life.

Now, I do not remember for sure, but I can assume that that journey is not like a fun little slide at the kiddie park.

The closest thing I can imagine it being like is white water rafting down some pretty active body of water.

We come out of that safe space with our peace disturbed and now wanting…

Wanting air…

Wanting warmth…

Wanting to shield from this new thing called brightness…

Wanting food…

And at that moment I can imagine we probably want to go back to where we just came from.

But here we are…

And we cry as an action to somehow someway get some help…

To make things better.

Why do I use this as an example in class all the time?

Because it is a straightforward example that we are born into trials and tribulations and it will be part of our human journey until we go onto the next unknown.

(and we can only hope that that next journey will be at the very least, a bit easier)

We innately know from birth that we need to do some kind of action to achieve and experience some kind of improvement.

As you read this now, I am sure something comes to mind.

And if something does not, consider where that something may be resting or even hiding in your consciousness as the actual action to improve your present circumstances.

Some may make choices or take actions that are “healthy” to improve their circumstances.

And some may end up choosing other options that are considered “unhealthy” in an attempt to improve their circumstances.

But in both cases, any given human’s main objective to is somehow someway “make things better” through what they have and what they know up to that point in his or her life.

To improve their reality.

Some have had slight moments of hardship.

And then there are others that have experienced profound and often unmentionable trials and tribulations.

But we all do our best to overcome.

We all have our fight song that we discover through our experiences that take us moment to moment to try to transform our reality so we can indeed experience peace and love.

Even if it is just a little bit at a time.

So take the time to understand a character’s fight song that gets them through their journey.

And take the time, if you have yet to do so, to discover or become aware of your own fight song that gets you through your own difficult times.

What motivates you to keep going?

What encourages you to keep going?

What brings you solace so you can keep going?

What is your slogan to remind you to keep going?

What helps you when nothing else seems to, to keep going?

If you understand this in your Life, you will understand this in the work and it will not seem like some equation that puts you in your head.

It will drop you into your gut and free you beyond belief in the work.

Because it connects you to your own and to other’s humanity

Even At Your “Worst”…Keep Creating!!!

IMG_9476

We all know that Life can throw us curve balls that knock us off track sometimes…

Sometimes those curve balls catch us of guard and we just have to laugh our asses off at the irony and say:

“Are you serious right now?!”…

And sometimes those curve balls knock the wind out of us and force us to crouch over with our hand up in the air saying:

“Ummm…Time out…Just give me a minute to catch my breath!”…

And then there are those other moments….

Oh, those other moments…

When those curve balls just come whaling at us…

Leaving us utterly speechless because there are no words to accompany such potentially shattering experiences…

And so we slowly make our way to the ground as the pregnant tears well up in our eyes…

Hoping the earth itself can somehow support such heaviness…

And we curl into that instinctual fetal position…

And listen to the buzz of the universal’s electro magnetic OM sound…

And hope that something comes along soon as the answer to rectify these really really crappy circumstances…

But wait?…

What if these crappy circumstances are the answer?…

What if within the complexity of these complex obstacles live the simplest of answers?…

What if all you are going through is the spark for something special?…

What if all you are going through is the food for your creative hunger?…

What if all you are going through is what inspires you to create something of profound substance?…

What if all you are going through is the fire you need to make the change you wish to see and experience?…

On a microcosmic level…

And yes…

Even on a macrocosmic level…

And then even on a bigger scale still…

What if all you are going through is guiding you towards your soul’s purpose?

What else would it be there for?

Really think about that?…

What is it all for?…

Just as punishment?…

Are you so bad, that Life just wants to treat you poorly and make you suffer?….

Are you really that bad?…

Is Life really that evil?…

I don’t think so…

I really really don’t think so…

We can leave that dark theory to someone else…

It is our experiences that feed us as artists…

We bring Light to all that darkness…

And it is all that darkness that forces us to the Light…

Artistcially speaking…

And yeah…

Spiritually speaking as well…

And the truth of the matter is that the more high stake our experiences are, the more we are usually inspired by them…

A banal everyday experience does not drive us to want to create…

It is what we have been through that is that driving creative force…

Everyday we have an opportunity to take those experiences and use them towards fulfilling our best artistic creative Life…

And as artists, we get to use those experiences towards fulfilling our creative dreams…

Only you truly have the power to realize every one of your own dreams…

You have to allow all you have been through to be the spark that keeps you creating…

We all come from and are made up of that magnificent creative Source…

Even at your “worst”, your creative energies are the exact medicine that actually will always keep you going….

It is your strength…

It is what allows for you to persevere…

And let’s be honest…

Don’t worry about everyone else’s take on things…

Your inner experience need not be understood by the others…

Let that go…

We cannot possibly expect the others to viscerally understand an experience that has never been tasted…

You may struggle hearing the most uninformed (I’m trying to be PC using the word ‘uninformed’) of things in response to your experience…

But you have to put it all into perspective…

It’s like asking a small child to solve an equation without ever taking a math class…

That child would look at you like your nuts and probably cover it with some crayola crayons…

Hmmm…

Still creative though…

That’s my kinda kid!…

Everything can only be understood by one’s accumulated Life knowledge up to that point in time…

But the experience is for you to grow, solve, expand, evolve, and share…

Yes, even at your “worst”…

Especially at your “worst”…

Keep going!

Suffer through if you must…

But never let adversity see you share a drop of fearful sweat…

Wipe your brow…

Take a breath…

Look at it in ‘its’ face…

Smile like a professional…

And say:

“Game on biatch!”

And then fight, wrestle, kick and scream with that ‘it’ if you must…

But never stop using that fire to continue creating…

Do it FOR YOU…

The power is in your hands…

In your mind…

And in your heart…

If you use what Life has given you, Life will have your back!

Now go make your creative mark!

Why Are You Doing It?…

Transcript Of Video:
“This is a question that every artist…

Every actor…

Has to ask themselves…

And you are not alone in that question…

It is a question that sometimes is a really difficult question to be honest with ourselves…

About why we are doing it?…

Are we doing this because we want to be rich and famous?…

And if that is the case…

Then there is no judgment in there…

But just know that that journey is going to be dependent upon receiving the validation through fame and fortune…

And that is a very bumpy/powerless journey…

But if you’re doing this with a heartfelt desire to tell stories…

Because you have something to say…

Or you have something to do…

That you know is going to help shift in consciousness towards a better tomorrow…

Or lift up just ONE person through you revealing the difficulties of the human condition…

Then that is a whole other story…

And you don’t give your power away…

You maintain your power…

Because you know YOU are that instrument of light that is revealing your Self through your work…

And that is where your power is…

THAT IS WHERE YOUR PURPOSE LIES!…”

It Ain’t All About Those Feelings…

Transcipt Of Video:

“Listen…

Feelings are really important to what we do as artists…

Because they give us the capability of accessing that full color wheel of the human condition within us…

However…

Feelings are really a result…

The result of needs being met or not…

So a lot of the time when I hear a specific actor saying…

‘I am not feeling it! I’m not feeling it!’

The first thing I’m thinking about is because you’re too contained in ‘self awareness’ OF feeling bringing you to the next moment…

And what you don’t realize is what’s bringing you to the next moment is your pursuit of NEEDS…

And those FEELINGS will be a result of those needs being met or not…

But if were so focused on our feeling life…

Then all our attention is on ourselves…

And not on the pursuit…

And not on the relationship…

And ALL feeling becomes a result of IF those needs are being met through those relationships…”

The Diamond In Your “Baggage”…

Transcript Of Video:

“We’re all doing what we can moment to moment to improve our lives and our Life experiences.

So we have to give ourselves a break from the pressure of appearing to have it all together.

Because nobody has it all together.

And no matter how hard you try, life is always going to throw a new curveball at you.

And all you can do is do the very best you can with what you have.

And learn from the experience.

And then the glory in that, is that you not only improve your life experience, but then you can use that experience of overcoming…use that experience of strife…and put it in your work.

So it no longer becomes “baggage”.

It becomes the diamond that you can use for the purpose of art.”

Why Does Art Hurt So Much Sometimes?!

IMG_5666

As I sit down to write this week’s blog, I am struggling with what to explore.

Normally I get inspired to share a specific message, and then the process begins to flow pretty freely.

So what is so different about this week?

Why the block?

And then I realized I am actually not being stifled.

I am being detoured and led to a question that seems to keep coming up with students and private clients alike.

“Why does art hurt so much? Why does this thing that we love so much cause so much pain sometimes?”

Without fail, this question touches me in a profound way because I understand the depths in which it is coming.

It is not just a question to solve as if it were an equation.

It is one of the soul.

It is also one that does not have a finite answer as the individual path, mission, and purpose is different for each and every one of us.

But I do know this…

Art requires awareness which leads to questioning

Which leads to truthful acknowledgment

Which leads to a desire to grow

Which leads to the need for action…

Which leads to growing pains…

Which leads to transformation…

Which leads to evolution…

Which inevitably leads to the hunger to create and reveal on an individual and global scale.

It goes without saying that this process is like no other.
This journey asks of the artist to look at aspects of the Self and the world in ways that one would not normally do so in everyday life.
As we begin to face deeper truths, we are presented with a choice.
Do we allow these truths and heightened experiences to stifle us into a protective falsified shell?
Or do we allow these experiences to open us and begin an expansive creative transformation.
When we choose the latter, our sensitivity to inner knowingness thus becomes much more acute and prevalent.
Our relationship with our true Self becomes more accessible and deeply visceral.
At times this could be very scary, and yes, even painful, because it begins to dismantle a structure that no longer serves.
A physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual cleanse and recalibration begin to occur.
Inevitably, we awaken to a greater need for change.
A change that serves our best and highest purpose and mission as artists.
Yes, this revolution in our Life may at times feel like a tremendous tidal wave as it begins to break down barriers, shift relationships, and open a space within us that has always been present but not readily accessible.
We begin to thirst and hunger for the truth.
We become much more aware of the energy within and around us.
We become more conscious of how certain energies either nourish or deplete our creative field.
We begin to feel things at a deeper level.
Our lens begins to change, our listening intensifies, and that subtle voice within our heart and soul begins to speak a truth that in most cases we have ignored.
Once this magical door opens, a myriad of feelings that accompany the human condition begin to serve as an artist’s treasure chest.
An awakening of the color wheel of Life is discovered.
This is a gift and opportunity to understand, feel, and utilize the human experience.
It is a new relationship with the Self, the work, and the world.
This discovery of the human condition allows us to finally BE without limitations.
We are and always have been all things and everything if we just allow ourself to tap into our own infinity.
The pain is actually a sign of a new beginning as an artist.
It is a creative rebirth and it hurts because of all the love that is attached.

An inexplicable love for creation.

And as with any birth, the pain that accompanies is a small price to pay for the priceless miracle of any high vibrational creation which serves not only us as artists, but the good for us as a collective.

Transcript For Video:
“Why do I think art is important?

Because I think art is willing to say what nobody else is willing to say.

I think art speaks loudly in the face of doctrine to say that just because your saying ‘this is true’ does not necessarily mean it is.

I think art says ‘We are not willing to be brainwashed’.

I think art says ‘Yes, but…’

I think art challenges.

I think art progresses.

I think art looks at reality and sees when something is not working for the best and highest good for us as a human collective, it takes that reality and tries to transform it for the better.

And sometimes that means shaking things up.

I think artists are some of the bravest people we know.

I think they are warriors.

I think they are the ones that emotionally go to war for mankind.

I think they are the ones that emotionally and even spiritually allow themselves to be a vessel or conduit of change; a vessel of light for the collective.

What is the key component to all artistry?

I think compassion.

I think compassion allows us to understand the human condition in a way that does not allow us to judge it.

What is the greatest message I have for people?

I think it is to know yourSelf.

I think it is really about a discovery about learning who you are.

And really trying to take any kind of obstacles that life has given you and transform them to serve somehow.

To serve yourSelf, to better yourSelf.

To better who you are, to better your experience.

But also to help humanity as a collective.

There is so much suffering in this world.

And we get so lost in greed, competition, fame, fortune, and power.

But we forget that there is really one thing that matters.

And that is that we are all connected.

We have become so comfortable in our lovelessness that love has become an endangered species.

But I think in order to really love you have to understand its opposite sometimes.

You have to understand what love is not.

You have to understand darkness from a primal level.

Because I think only until you are able to understand its opposite can you really appreciate what love really is.

And then really pursue a mission in the name of love.

Otherwise it is all smoke and mirrors.

And I think we have plenty of that happening.”

Change Is Coming…Let Go Of Holding On

42d0fc21-f71e-4ecb-9480-aca5f4cc2061

As I am sure many of you have been experiencing, especially those of you that are highly sensitive, there have been a great deal of energy shifts happening in and around all of us.

The velocity of things is intensifying and the universe is going through a powerful transformation while asking…or I should say…demanding…all of us to also accompany her/him/it on this evolutionary journey.

There is not much of a choice…

It is happening and we have the responsibility to be part of that change…that growth…and that expansion.

If it is happening ‘out there’, it is most definitely happening ‘within’ as we are all connected to the greater part of the creative expansive whole.

Of course, it is very easy for us to get alarmed by these experiences especially if we do not understand what they are.
And yes, there has been an alarming amount of crisis in our world.

However, without sounding trite, in the presence of light, humanity, without fail, is infinitely stronger together than the desperately despicable attempts and actions of darkness.

And it is exactly that light that is calling upon all of us to match its frequency now.
In order for us to match that frequency, many are experiencing growing pains to get there.

Just as we have growing pains from all the transitions of childhood to adulthood, so do we have these similar pains as we shed what no longer serves in order to evolve into our higher collective self.

Very often, as these expansive energy shifts happen, they can cause some intense physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual experiences that may feel like crisis because they quite obviously differ from those in our familiar everyday life.

But they are guiding us to change for our best and highest good.

For the universal good.

A change that aids our soul’s individual mission here on this beautiful planet to help one another get back to the ultimate truth.

Some may feel highly emotional.

Maybe you catch yourself crying or laughing out of the blue without even understanding where it is coming from.

Some may have odd feelings of confusion.

Others may be experiencing agitation, irritability, or even outburst of irrational anger.

There may be those of you that have the feeling of just wanting to impulsively change everything including your job, location, relationships, etc.

Maybe you just want to get away.

There are those that may just do the opposite and want to cling onto everything for dear life.

And then there are those that may even get so triggered by these shifts that they act out in self destructive behavior as a coping mechanism to deal with these changes because they feel it is just too much at one time.

This is an important time individually and universally.

The best piece of advice I can give during these times is to let go of holding on.

I know these times can feel so extremely difficult.

It is especially during these times that we do indeed want to clench onto what feels familiar by believing they serve as some sort of life preserver preventing us from drowning in the unknown.

But sometimes it is our holding onto the familiar that is actually the very thing that is keeping us in the circumstances we are trying to free ourself from in order to expand and grow.

What if the unknown is not the enemy we seem to be defining it as?

What if it is the hallelujah we have been seeking?

What if beyond that wall of our everyday rigid belief system and structure lives the key to our personal and collective healing, to our freedom, and even to the bliss of our true purpose.

To get there, we have to be willing to do the work.
We have to go into the trenches.

We have to be willing to face what is not serving us and LET IT GO to make room for what does.
And we have to have the Strength, Courage, Perseverance, Willingness, Self Trust, Self Nurturing, and Self Love to do this kind of work.

Of course others may be of service but the truth is it is ALL YOU in relationship to your role with the universe.

It can only happen from and through you.

Do yourself the favor and break free from any bondage that is not good to you, for you, and about you.

Then climb over that tall wall no matter how difficult it may be.

Use your blood, sweat, and tears to finally meet your true Self on the other side of what is keeping you from your own personal evolution so you can join in the universal evolution.

Once you get there, I guarantee you will wonder why you held onto all the other stuff as long as you had.

A change for the better is coming.

The universe wants you to be happy, healthy, vibrant, successful, and encompassed by love and compassion.

It is just waiting for you to join in the momentum.
